Same old, same old

Once upon a time, in a land far, far away I worked in an office.  In that office was a young lady who hated her job.  She hated her job very much, but she hated looking for work even more.  It seemed better to her to endure the job that she knew, rather than pursue another job.  On her desk she had a paper weight that said, “Same old, same old.”  (She had a license plate that indicated a similar sentiment – but it was a bit more crass.)

I felt sorry for this young lady, because she was obviously miserable and I hoped that she would find the strength to find a new job.  I did.

Several years later….many severals actually, I ended back up in that office for some reason, or another – I don’t even remember why now – and she was still there.  She still had the same paper weight and the same sentiment concerning her job.  I couldn’t  understand why she would choose to remain at a job that she hated so very much…and then it occurred to me, it wasn’t that she wouldn’t leave, it was that she couldn’t leave. She would remain there until the time came for her to quit working – for whatever reason that might be.  She would never change. The enemy of our souls is the same way.  Scripture tells us that there is nothing new under the sun.  Why then, do we keep looking around, expecting so see him pull some new trick out of his hat?  He is the antithesis of our Lord.  Jesus’ law is the law of life.  His law is the law of sin and death.  (Romans 8:2)

So, while soaking in 2 Corinthians, it ought not to come as any surprise to see these words, “…for our weapons of  warfare are not of the flesh, but divinely powerful for the destruction of fortresses.  We are destroying speculations and every lofty thing raised up against the knowledge of God, and we are taking every thought captive to the obedience of Christ.”  (Chapter 10, verses 4 & 5)

Suddenly before  my very eyes, the age-old battle is being played out – again and again in the hearts and minds of Believers every where.  The enemy is STILL desiring to set himself above the Most High.  He is still trying to exalt himself – and his ways and his laws of sin and death – over the I AM!  Every time we are faced with disobedient thoughts – any thought that is contrary to the Word of God – no matter how small – the battle is taking place in us.

Whether we allow the enemy to win is our choice.  Will we allow him to seat himself on the thrones of our minds or will we wield our divinely powerful weapon of warfare – the Word of God – and strike him down?!  The serpent came and unseated one man from his place of walking with God, using his lies and his deceit.  Will we allow him to unseat us from our place, seated in heavenly places next to Jesus our Lord?  It is a question I find I must answer every time I am tempted to believe something that is in direct opposition to the Word.

We must recognize his tactics and be on our guard. We can not be deceived into thinking that our thoughts are “just” thoughts – they are a battle ground where the enemy of our soul is still trying to exalt himself above the stars of God.  (Isaiah 14)

Same old, same old.
